Between two methods – an empirical analysis with teachers of the deaf
Early language access is the key to language and cognitive development. For hearing-impaired children, sign language is the accessible language that ensures access to knowledge and learning materials for them. This study partially repeats an investigation published in 2009 placing it into a sociolinguistic frame. It aims to find out how special education teachers‘ attitude at institutions for the deaf has changed towards the current auditory- verbal education and towards bilingual education to be introduced in the last ten years. In addition, this study has also explored what advantages and disadvantages are known of these training forms and what further connections can be revealed between the language of instruction and the efficiency of teaching. Although the investigation has been carried out with a small number of respondents, clear tendencies have been outlined during data analysis.

Cochlear implantation – Opportunities and constraints
Cochlear implantation (CI) is a more and more widely used hearing loss treatment. Although in many cases it is considered as a miracle, researchers also draw the attention to its possible dangers. The aim of the research presented in this study is to provide a wider overview of the advantages and limitations of the implantation and to introduce the everyday experience, opportunities, and challenges of people with implants in Hungary. The study outlines the international and Hungarian literature and internet sources in a metaanalysis. Based on these results, doctors, and people with implants, and/or their family members have also been interviewed. The investigation is built on these two source groups and it describes the most important conclusions.

The gender differences in subteeners′ reading attitude - The impact of parental reading behaviour
This paper presents the results of a research project which analysed the impact of parental reading behaviour on the gender differences in subteeners′ reading attitude. The applied theoretical approach is based on the tri-component view of reading attitude, and the empirical data collection focuses on reading preferences, habits, and reading attitudes. A sample of 1601 students and their parents filled in a questionnaire on reading preferences and habits, and the students completed a reading attitude scale. The questionnaire has been partly adapted and partly devised by the author. Variance analyses (ANOVA) are used to determine the statistically significant differences. Independent variables of the measurement are materialized dimensions of reading, purpose, and frequency. As assumed, girls are generally more influenced by parental reading habits and exhibit a more favourable reading attitude if either parent has a positive reading behaviour. Boys′ reading attitude is far less influenced by the parents′ behavioural patterns; nevertheless, the father′s impact is significantly stronger than that of the mother. In the light of the results, this paper also gives some brief thought to what can be done; thereby, indicating some directions of further research.

An impact study of listening comprehension texts during lessons and oral text production in the first four grades at school
This study investigates the role of first language competences in the learning process. This research has been carried out with classroom observation and by categorizing the quantity and quality of listening comprehension texts heard during lessons and of the students’ oral text production. This research might explain how the development tasks for oral text production recommended in the National Core Curriculum (2012) appear in the observed classes. In addition, the analysis of the quantitative and qualitative indicators of students’ interaction provides insight into the level of thinking procedures. Results show that task comprehension and versatile analysis of the given context influence the development of the ability to implement the acquired knowledge in practice and of problem-solving.

Text processing exercises for the development of digital text comprehension
Digital text comprehension is the sine qua non for success in the digital world, therefore, there should be a larger emphasis on its development at school. Similar to „traditional” text comprehension, the development of digital text comprehension is a cross-curricular target system which helps students to develop their digital competences. This study distinguishes three levels of text processing based on thinking procedures, reading strategies, and the applied navigational steps and links complex and professional text processing tasks to these levels. The study provides basic non subject-specific digital reading exercises which can be introduced in different didactic phases during the lesson and which facilitate the development of students with various learning styles. Most of these text comprehension exercises are based on the critical processing of search engine hit lists, on creating awareness of the diversity of moving along the reading path, and on the use of web 2.0 applications for learning.
