Journal Profile

The journal has been published by the Society of Hungarian Linguistics since 2008. The issues (four issues per year are published solely online and the full content of the journal is accessible free-of-charge without registration.

The journal Anyanyelv-pedagógia [First Language Pedagogy] is the only journal in Hungary and in the Carpathian Basin with a strong focus on research on first language pedagogy and Hungarian as a first language. The journal offers theoretical and practical papers that promote Hungarian as a first language education and development of communication skills in Hungary, beyond the  borders, and overseas as well. They also support first language development in the family and at institutions. The abstracts, titles, and keywords in English all strengthen the international accessibility of the papers published in the journal.

The journal Anyanyelv-pedagógia [First Language Pedagogy] is a peer-reviewed scientific journal publishing studies mainly in applied linguistics, first language pedagogy, and pedagogy. The publication has been continuous since 2008. The journal is registered as a peer-reviewed scientific journal in the Hungarian Scientific Bibliography (Magyar Tudományos Művek Tára, MTMT) and in the database of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. The journal articles have been published with a DOI number in the international CrossRef system since 2016.

The column Tanulmányok [Studies] presents studies mainly in applied linguistics and first language pedagogy and—in a smaller number—in pedagogy. In the column Műhely [Workshop], there are studies and articles about the practical activities in education at the institutions and in the family and research on these issues. The column Szemle [Reviews] introduces new books, journals, and professional websites in Hungary, also related to first language education. The column Kitekintő [Outlook] contains reviews and studies on publications about first language pedagogy, professional events, and research results in the regions with Hungarian minority beyond the borders as well as on first language education in other countries. The column Mozaik [Mosaic] provides reports on professional events and conferences on first language pedagogy, competitions in education, research groups, professional organisations, and outstanding researchers in Hungary. In the column Postaláda [Postbox], there are letters to the editor on current issues in first language education.

The main columns of the journal are complemented by the columns Naptár [Calendar] and Könyvajánló [Book reviews]. The column Naptár [Calendar] lists the upcoming events in linguistics and first language pedagogy. In the column Könyvajánló [Book reviews], the editorial board compiles a selection of recently published books.

Editorial board

The quality of the journal is also guaranteed by the editorial board consisting of nineteen members who work at six different higher education institutions and two other teaching and research institutions: editor-in-chief, deputy editor-in-chief, columnists, senior editor, editor, electronic editors, translator, language editor for English, and further members of the editorial board. The work of the board is supported by an advisory body of seven international experts.

Publication process

Only peer-reviewed first publications can be published in the journal Anyanyelv-pedagógia [First Language Pedagogy]. Two reviewers read the papers in the columns of Tanulmányok [Studies] and Műhely [Workshop] (two reviewers for each column), while one reviewer reads the papers in the columns Szemle [Reviews], Kitekintő [Outlook], and Mozaik [Mosaic] (one reviewer for each of these columns).

The editing process:

– The editorial board decides whether the incoming articles suit the profile of the journal and assigns reviewers to the articles.

– The editorial board invites reviewers who prepare the reviews of the papers anonymously.

– The editorial board—based on the reviews—decides whether they accept or reject the article or send it back to the author for revision. Then they notify the author.

– If necessary, authors revise the articles based on the reviewer’s guideline.

– The columnist edits the accepted papers content wise and discusses further revision with the author.

– The deputy editor-in-chief checks the articles edited by the columnists and forwards them to the editors for further editing.

– The senior editor checks the articles content wise and formats them.

– The other editor checks and proofreads the edited articles.

– The editors assign an international DOI number to the articles and to the references of the articles.

– The translator prepares the English translation of the abstracts, titles and key words.

– The language editor for English checks and corrects the translations.

– The editors prepare the Author’s Datasheets for publication.

– The technical editors edit the figures, tables and texts in HTML and upload the final version of the papers in the admin panel.

– The technical editors send the corrected and edited version of the articles to the authors and ask for their approval for publication.

– The editor-in-chief and the deputy editor-in-chief prepare a thematic editorial for the upcoming issue.

– The editor-in-chief reads and checks the uploaded papers again and shows if correction is needed while consulting with the senior editor.

– The technical editors collect the authors’ approvals and prepare corrections asked by the editor-in-chief and the authors.

– The editor-in-chief approves the publication of the new issue.

– The technical editors publish the new issue of the journal.

– The technical editors and editors edit the papers published in HTML into PDF format with continuous page numbering, assign them with the international DOI number, and upload them on the website.

– The editors notify the authors about the publication.

– A member of the editorial board uploads the data of the published articles into the Hungarian Scientific Bibliography (Magyar Tudományos Művek Tára, MTMT).

– The editors process the data of the published articles for the Hungarian Periodicals Table of Contents Database (MATARKA).

– A member of the editorial board uploads the articles with the international DOI number into the repository of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences.

Members of the editorial board follow the editing process in a closed online platform. The editorial board constantly undertakes both technic and content developments in order to keep the professional and technical quality of the journal.

Authors

The authors of the journal articles are listed under the menu About us. Researchers, teachers at higher education institutions, experts, students, and practising teachers can publish under the columns in case their papers meet the professional expectations. The Author’s Datasheets provide information about the authors at the end of the articles.

The papers published in the journal between 2008 and 2019 (669 in total) have been written by 505 authors. A number of the authors are internationally recognized researchers. However, as the journal is also popular among practising teachers, many of the authors are practising teachers themselves.

Reputation

Visitor statistics (see below) show the increasing popularity and recognition of the journal year by year. The number of readers has been constantly growing since the start of the journal in 2008. There were 192,510 page views from 98 countries in 2019. Visitor statistics were prepared with Advanced Web Statistics 7.4 until 2017 and they have been measured with Google Analytics since 2018.

The high number of references and independent citations support the recognition of the journal, too. The editorial board organizes round table discussions, conference lectures, and presentations about the research topics. In addition, there are reviews published about the journal in other academic journals.

Mission

The journal Anyanyelv-pedagógia [First Language Pedagogy] aims to support the work of researchers of first language pedagogy in Hungary and beyond the borders in the Hungarian diaspora / as well as the work of teachers and educators teaching in Hungarian. It also aims to publish the results on the international scene. The journal promotes the practice of education at the institutions and in the family by providing recent methodological solutions and up-to-date, child-centred development processes and it also introduces the national and international scientific background of all these issues.

The editorial board makes continuous efforts to further strengthen the professional and technical quality of the journal, to increase the number of readers year by year, and to register the journal in new national and international professional databases. The editorial board makes every effort so that the journal Anyanyelv-pedagógia [First Language Pedagogy] keeps stimulating the development of first language education and promoting research in first language pedagogy not only in Hungary but also beyond the borders, in the Hungarian diaspora in the future.
